Manila Water Co. Inc. (MWC) has committed an investment of P4.2 billion toward the realization of an extensive sewer project.
The primary objective behind this endeavor is to enhance sanitation standards and foster a cleaner environment for the communities residing in Metro Manila.
The company’s mandate to deliver top-notch sanitation services to its expanding customer base of 7.6 million individuals in the east zone of Metro Manila and parts of Rizal is the driving force behind this initiative.
It is important to note that this project runs parallel to the ongoing efforts to ensure uninterrupted access to clean water for its valued clientele.
To elaborate on the specifics, the ambitious undertaking entails the construction of the Mandaluyong West–San Juan South–Quezon City South Sewer project, encompassing a total length of 51 kilometers.
At the heart of this extensive sewer system lies a sewage treatment plant with an initial capacity of 60 million liters per day (MLD), which can be expanded to 120 MLD as the need arises.
Complementing this infrastructure will be a major pump station, 13 lift stations, 276 interceptor boxes, and a 16-channel interceptor.
By 2037, Manila Water anticipates that the project will cater to an additional 704,260 residents in the localities of Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City.
Leveraging their 25 years of industry experience, the water concessionaire has already made remarkable progress in its wastewater services in the east zone.
They currently operate 41 wastewater treatment facilities, boasting an aggregate treatment capacity of 410 MLD.
This remarkable figure reflects a staggering 1,025 percent increase in capacity since 1997.
Jeric Sevilla, the corporate communications affairs group director at Manila Water, emphasized the significance of wastewater management as an integral part of their sustainability agenda.
He stressed that their responsibility extends beyond merely expanding wastewater services to reach a larger customer base.
It also encompasses minimizing their environmental impact, a goal they are committed to achieving through their diligent efforts.
Presently, the construction of the Mandaluyong West Sewer Network Package 1 is well underway in Barangay Hulo, Mandaluyong City.
Adopting an innovative approach to minimize disruption to traffic flow along the affected roads—Coronado St., F. Blumentritt St., Private Road, Saniboy St., and San Francisco St.—the project incorporates the utilization of micro-tunneling technology instead of conventional open-trench pipelaying methods.
Manila Water estimates that the construction work on these roads will reach completion by August, alleviating any inconvenience caused to motorists.
It is important to note that Manila Water’s service area encompasses the east zone of the Greater Manila Area.
This includes sections of Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Pateros, San Juan, Taguig, Marikina, most parts of Quezon City, portions of Manila, as well as several towns in Rizal.
As of June 2, 2023, MWC closed at P17.82, up by 0.11%. Support is near P17.20, while the resistance is near P21.60.
