After obtaining an environmental compliance certificate in January, DMCI Mining Corp. aims to ship 1.5 million wet metric tons (WMT) of nickel ore this year.
DMCI Holdings disclosed this target in a communication sent to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
The issuance of the environmental compliance certificate enables the Consunji-led mining company to extract and produce 2 million WMT of nickel ore, surpassing the previous allowance of 1 million WMT granted to its subsidiary, Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation.
This development will amplify the mining giant’s extraction efforts, given the escalating significance of this vital mineral in the global economy.
The increasing demand for batteries, commonly utilized in electric vehicles, as part of the worldwide push for “cleaner” modes of transportation has stimulated the demand for nickel.
According to data obtained from the International Nickel Study Group, both the supply and demand for nickel are expected to surge, with global primary nickel production projected to reach 3.374 million tons this year.
DMCI Mining President Tulsi Das C. Reyes stated that their operations are equipped with the necessary facilities and mitigation measures to minimize the environmental impact.
He further mentioned that with these measures in place, they aim to achieve nickel ore production ranging from 1.7 million to 2 million tons this year.
Data provided by DMCI revealed a staggering 88% surge in nickel ore production for its subsidiary Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation (ZDMC) during the first quarter, amounting to 599,000 WMT.
However, the total shipments of the mining company led by Consunji experienced a 21% decline, reaching 487,000 WMT, primarily due to the depletion of the Berong Nickel Corp. mine and stockpile.
According to Statista data, the Philippines accounted for 13.7% of global nickel production in 2021, with Indonesia emerging as the leading producer at 37%.
