Forecasts about the demand for coal could not reflect reality more, the World Coal Association warns of idealists who want the governments to ignore their use.
At present, the WCA claims there are reliable forecasts that demand for coal will continue to be an essential part of the global electricity generation mix.
According to Phil Star, naturally, they are not aligned with what present environmentalists would like to believe and advocate.
Based on a report from the International Energy Agency, the use of coal for power generation would remain at a steady pace for the next five years, at least.
However, calls made by environmentalists for governments and private businesses to stop fossil fuel use are getting stronger.
They think that it is easy to replace fossil fuel with renewable energy sources.
Coal Demand Shows Its Value
Forecasts that demand for coal at present continue to show that what is real is not necessarily what is ideal.
According to WCA chief, Michelle Manook, coal demand projections show that coal use is still very real. This is a sharp contrast to how idealists are claiming their use can be scrapped.
Manook said that the world could not just ignore the reality of coal and its uses.
No matter what the environmentalists say, they remain in an ideal world.
As such, Manook recommends having a sensible discussion about how to bridge the gap between the real and ideological scenarios.
There is a need for a collaboration to happen, among governments, private businesses, and environmentalists.
Coal Can be Part of Low-Carbon Solution
She warns about anti-coal groups spreading the idea that coal is the bane of them all – that coal cannot be part of a low-carbon solution.
Manook said that is simply untrue.
She explained that members of the entire coal value chain have to reunite in support of the coal industry.
They need to educate the generally-unaware public that coal has some real and substantial economic value they could not just ignore.
Coal can effectively contribute to the economic growth of all, for one.
She, however, admitted that the cooperation of the governments and investors to realize the economic value of coal is critical.
Manook explained that IEA’s ‘all fuels and all technologies’ mantra is a good framework to observe in achieving the collaboration of industry, government, and investment policies.
Only through collaboration can there be the attainment of substantial economic and environmental outcomes.
Moreover, Asia cannot ignore the need for coal.
Most Asian countries, in particular, require a massive amount of low-cost sources of energy to boost their economies.
