Elisha Lawrence is the chief of the Global Anti-Piracy division of ABS-CBN Corporation.
She expressed her gratitude for the cooperative action that the Los Angeles Police Department performed recently.
Lawrence cited that they are thankful for the investigation that the law enforcement officials conducted.
Moreover, she mentioned that they at the ABS-CBN Corporation feel grateful following the arrest of Romula Araneta Castillo.
Lawrence referred to the latter as the kingpin in the scam involving the distribution of pirated set-top boxes.
The anti-piracy executive remarked that the sales of the fake equipment are a way to defraud and prey on the innocent public.
Lawrence stressed that Castillo’s venture was a scam operation. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested the suspected pirate on February 7.
Undercover police officers availed five set-top boxes from the alleged perpetrator of the crime.
On the scene, they confirmed that one of the purchased units streamed unlawful content live.
Philippine daily newspaper The Philippine Star reported that ABS-CBN Corporation had filed civil complaints from the federal courts in the United States against Castillo.
Furthermore, Alberto Ace Mayol Alfaro is allegedly an accomplice of the suspect in operating the piracy network.
The broadcast giant is seeking reparation worth millions against the two suspects. The latter’s operation reportedly spans across United States state lines.
Castillo and Alfaro pirated the copyrighted content belonging to ABS-CBN Corporation. Besides, they allegedly performed this crime using illegal set-top boxes, or Internet Protocol television (IPTV) boxes.
These units of pirated equipment allowed the unsuspecting buyers to gain access to the live programming of ABS-CBN Corporation.
The customers did not have to pay the necessary fees for the IPTV boxes they availed.
In light of these events, ABS-CBN Corporation urged the people to stay away from the illegal sales of unauthorized set-top boxes.
Moreover, the company informed the public not to browse pirated websites.
In this manner, they would not become victims of malware and piracy, the entertainment and media group relayed.
Before 2019 ended, ABS-CBN Corporation also submitted a complaint in the US Federal court. The accused is 1700 Cuts Technology and a man named Anthony Brown.
The suspects allegedly pirated the content of the broadcasting network. Plus, they performed trademark infringement.
In April 2019, ABS-CBN Corporation was victorious in an anti-piracy case in the United States.
A Florida-based US federal district court commanded 27 pirate website operators to pay the Filipino firm $1 million each in damages.
ABS-CBN Corporation cited that the illegal websites streamed portals that provided access to Filipino content in the United States and overseas.
