Dividend Yield vs. Capital Depreciation

In this report, I’ll share with you the 13 common stocks listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange that have a more than 10% dividend yield based on 12 trailing months as of August 25, 2023.

Let me remind you that being a generous dividend-issuing company doesn’t necessarily mean you should buy the stock.

What good does it make if the company gives you a 12% annual dividend yield but its share price is down 25% YTD?

You need to look beyond the stock’s annual dividend yield and capital appreciation or depreciation. Consider the percentage of risk applied on your trailing stop.

Your trailing stop supersedes everything. Once it’s hit, it means your unrealized loss is already greater than what you can bear.

Remaining invested solely for dividends, even when they are insufficient to offset capital depreciation and ongoing price decline, lacks logical coherence.

This is why instead of just enumerating the 13 stocks with their dividend yield (ttm), I’ll also mention their YTD price change.
